Goa is the one destination where the same trip can cost three times as much depending on the week you pick. Season matters more here than anywhere else in India.
Five days, by group type
Normal comfort, shoulder season, excluding travel to Goa:
| Group | Total | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Rs 22,000 β 28,000 | Rs 22,000 β 28,000 |
| Couple | Rs 32,000 β 42,000 | Rs 16,000 β 21,000 |
| Family of 4 | Rs 55,000 β 70,000 | Rs 14,000 β 17,500 |
| Friends, group of 6 | Rs 72,000 β 95,000 | Rs 12,000 β 16,000 |
Notice the pattern: cost per person falls as the group grows, because rooms and taxis get shared. Solo travel in Goa is the most expensive per head by a wide margin.
Season changes everything
| Season | Months | Room rate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | Mid-Dec to mid-Jan | 2 β 3x normal | Best weather, worst prices, heaviest crowds |
| High | Nov to Feb | 1.3 β 1.6x | Very good weather |
| Shoulder | Oct, Mar | Normal | Good weather, sensible prices |
| Monsoon | Jun to Sep | 0.5 β 0.7x | Green and cheap, but many shacks shut and swimming is unsafe |
North Goa or South Goa?
| North | South | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Busy, nightlife, markets | Quiet, spacious, calm |
| Beaches | Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator | Palolem, Agonda, Colva, Benaulim |
| Budget stays | Plenty | Fewer |
| Food cost | Wide range | Slightly higher, fewer options |
| Getting around | Everything close | Longer distances |
| Suits | Friends, first-timers | Couples, families, repeat visitors |
First trip with friends, north is the easier choice. Family with small children or a couple wanting quiet, south is worth the extra travel.
Staying
| Type | Shoulder | Peak |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm | Rs 600 β 1,000 pp | Rs 1,200 β 2,000 pp |
| Budget room / guest house | Rs 1,500 β 2,500 | Rs 3,500 β 6,000 |
| Mid-range hotel | Rs 3,000 β 5,000 | Rs 7,000 β 12,000 |
| Beach resort | Rs 8,000 β 15,000 | Rs 18,000 β 35,000 |
Villas work well for groups. Six people in a three-bedroom villa at Rs 9,000 a night is Rs 1,500 each β usually cheaper than three hotel rooms and with a kitchen thrown in.
Food
| Style | Per person, per day |
|---|---|
| Local canteens and thalis | Rs 450 β 600 |
| Beach shacks, mixed | Rs 900 β 1,200 |
| Restaurants and cafΓ©s | Rs 1,600 β 2,200 |
A Goan fish thali at a local place runs Rs 150 to Rs 250 and is often the best meal of the trip. Beach shacks charge two to three times more for similar food with a view.
Getting around β this is where Goa is different
Goa has almost no useful public transport for tourists. You will rent something, and that is a real budget line.
| Option | Per day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scooter | Rs 400 β 700 | What most people do. Fuel extra. |
| Bike (Bullet etc.) | Rs 800 β 1,500 | |
| Self-drive car | Rs 1,800 β 3,000 | Sensible for families |
| Taxi, point to point | Rs 400 β 1,200 a trip | Expensive, adds up fast |
Activities
| Activity | Per person |
|---|---|
| Water sports package | Rs 1,500 β 2,500 |
| Dudhsagar Falls trip | Rs 1,500 β 2,500 |
| Scuba at Grande Island | Rs 2,500 β 4,000 |
| Sunset cruise | Rs 400 β 800 |
| Old Goa churches | Free |
| Fort Aguada, Chapora | Free or nominal |
A worked example: family of four, five days
| Head | Amount |
|---|---|
| Hotel, 4 nights, 2 rooms, mid-range | Rs 28,000 |
| Food, 5 days, 4 people | Rs 20,000 |
| Self-drive car, 5 days + fuel | Rs 12,000 |
| Activities and entries | Rs 8,000 |
| Buffer, 12% | Rs 8,200 |
| Total, excluding travel to Goa | Rs 76,200 |
Five ways to cut the bill
- Avoid the Christmas fortnight. Biggest single saving available.
- Rent scooters instead of taking taxis. Over five days this is thousands.
- Eat one meal a day at a local canteen. Better food, a third of the price.
- Book a villa if you are five or more. Usually beats separate rooms.
- Stay slightly inland. Ten minutes from the beach can halve the room rate.
And if you can travel in monsoon, Goa is genuinely cheap and genuinely beautiful β just accept that swimming is out and some shacks are closed.
Getting to Goa
| From | Train, 3A | Bus, AC sleeper | Flight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | Rs 900 β 1,300 | Rs 1,200 β 2,500 | Rs 2,500 β 6,000 |
| Bangalore | Rs 900 β 1,400 | Rs 1,100 β 2,200 | Rs 2,500 β 6,000 |
| Pune | Rs 700 β 1,100 | Rs 900 β 1,800 | Rs 3,000 β 7,000 |
| Delhi | Rs 2,200 β 3,000 | β | Rs 4,500 β 12,000 |
Fares spike hard around Christmas and long weekends, in every mode. From Mumbai, Pune or Bangalore the overnight train is usually the best combination of cost and convenience β you arrive in the morning without losing a day.
Two airports, and it matters
Goa has Dabolim in the south and Mopa in the north. Check which one your flight uses before booking a hotel β the wrong pairing means an expensive hour-long transfer at both ends.
| Airport | Close to | Taxi to the far end |
|---|---|---|
| Mopa (north) | Anjuna, Vagator, Arambol | Rs 2,000 β 3,000 to south Goa |
| Dabolim (south) | Colva, Benaulim, Palolem | Rs 1,800 β 2,800 to north Goa |
A five day plan
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, settle in, sunset at the nearest beach |
| 2 | North beaches β Baga, Calangute, Anjuna. Water sports if you want them. |
| 3 | Old Goa churches, Panjim, Fontainhas, evening cruise |
| 4 | Dudhsagar Falls or a spice plantation, or a quiet beach day south |
| 5 | Market at Anjuna or Mapusa, depart |
Do not try to cover north and south in five days unless you enjoy driving. The distance between Arambol and Palolem is nearly two hours each way, and doing it twice costs you the better part of a day.
Where money quietly leaks in Goa
- Shack prices versus local prices. The same fish curry rice costs Rs 200 inland and Rs 600 on the sand.
- Water sports packages. Quoted per person, sold hard, and negotiable. The first price is never the price.
- Taxi fares. Goa has no meter culture. Agree the fare before getting in, every time.
- Alcohol at hotels. Goa is cheap for alcohol at shops and not cheap at resorts.
- Scooter fuel. Small but constant. Budget Rs 150 to Rs 250 a day per scooter.
- Rental disputes. Photograph the scooter from all sides before you ride off. Scratch claims at return are common.
Monsoon Goa, honestly
June to September, rates drop by 30 to 50% and the place empties out. What you get and what you give up:
| You get | You give up |
|---|---|
| Half price rooms | Swimming β the sea is genuinely unsafe |
| Green landscape, full waterfalls | Many beach shacks are closed |
| No crowds anywhere | Water sports shut down |
| Better food service | Scooter riding in heavy rain |
If your idea of Goa is beaches and swimming, skip the monsoon. If it is old churches, quiet cafΓ©s, Dudhsagar in full flow and a rate that makes a week affordable, it is the best time to go.
Questions people ask
How many days is right for Goa?
Four to five. Three feels rushed once you account for arrival and departure days. More than a week and most people run out of things they actually want to do.
Is Goa safe for solo women travellers?
Generally yes, and it is a common solo destination. Normal precautions apply β avoid isolated beaches after dark, agree taxi fares in advance, and hostels in Anjuna and Palolem are used to solo travellers.
Do I need to book a scooter in advance?
Not usually. Rentals are everywhere and walking up gets you a better rate than online. In peak season around Christmas, book ahead.
Is south Goa boring?
It is quieter, which is the point. If you want nightlife and markets, stay north. If you want an empty beach and to read a book, south is better and you will not miss anything you came for.
Can I do Goa on Rs 10,000?
For five days, only if you stay in hostels, eat at local canteens, share a scooter and travel by train off-season. It is possible. It is not comfortable, and it is not what most people mean when they say they are going to Goa.
