Bus Fare Estimator

State transport corporations publish their per kilometre rates, so a real estimate is possible. Private operators charge more and jump a lot on weekends, so they get a range instead of a number.

The formula

Fare = Distance x rate per km for that class STATE BUS RATE PER KM Ordinary / non AC 0.90 to 1.20 Express 1.20 to 1.50 Semi deluxe 1.50 to 1.90 AC seater 1.90 to 2.50 AC sleeper / Volvo 2.50 to 3.50 Private buses charge 1.2x to 2.0x the state rate. Weekends and festivals are at the top of that range.

What this assumes

  • Per km rates are typical figures. Every state sets its own and revises them from time to time.
  • Interstate routes have entry taxes that add to the fare.
  • Private bus pricing jumps hard on weekends, long weekends and festivals.
  • Tolls are usually already included in the fare quoted to you.
  • On popular routes during peak season, private fares can go above even the top of our range.

Common questions

Why is the private bus fare a range?

Because it genuinely changes. The same seat on the same route can cost almost double on a Friday compared to a Tuesday. One fixed number would be wrong most of the time.

Is the state bus always cheaper?

On base fare, yes. State bus rates are fixed and do not surge. Private buses often give better comfort and timing, and on a quiet weekday can cost about the same.

Do these fares include toll?

Yes. Bus fares quoted to you already include tolls and running costs. What may not be included is a state entry tax on interstate routes.

How early should I book?

For a private bus on a weekend or festival, as early as possible. That is when prices climb the most. State bus fares do not change with booking date.
