The formula
What this assumes
- This is running cost only. It does not include what the vehicle cost to buy, which is where most of the petrol versus EV difference actually sits.
- EV cost assumes charging at home. Public fast charging can cost two to three times more per unit.
- Real mileage is usually below the company claimed figure. Use what your vehicle actually gives.
- AC, traffic, load and hill roads all reduce mileage, sometimes by 20% or more.
- CNG pumps are not available everywhere, which matters on long trips.
Common questions
Is an EV really cheaper to run?
On running cost, yes, often a third of petrol if you charge at home. But that does not settle the question. The buying price and the battery replacement cost sit outside this calculation.
Should I enter claimed mileage or real mileage?
Real, always. Company figures come from test conditions that have nothing to do with Indian roads. Most cars give 15 to 25% less than claimed.
Does CNG make sense for long trips?
On cost, definitely. On convenience, it depends on the route. CNG pumps are concentrated in certain corridors and a long queue at the only pump for 200 km cancels out the saving in time.
Why is my highway mileage better than city?
Steady speed and no idling. City driving with constant stopping can be 30 to 40% worse. For a highway trip, use your highway figure.
