Calculator
Train Fare Estimator
This estimates a fare using the published per kilometre rates. It is not IRCTC and it cannot see live prices. That is exactly why it gives you a range and says so on every result.
The formula
What this assumes
- This is an estimate, not a live fare. Always check on IRCTC before you travel.
- Railway fares are telescopic, meaning the rate per km drops as distance increases. Very short and very long trips drift furthest from this estimate.
- Minimum fares apply per class, which is why a short AC journey costs a lot per kilometre.
- Food charges on Rajdhani and Shatabdi are inside the ticket and not shown separately.
- Concessions and quotas are not calculated.
Common questions
Why do you show a range and not the exact fare?
Because we do not have the exact fare and will not pretend to. Railway fares have telescopic rates, rounding rules and dynamic pricing on premium trains. A range with the method shown is honest. A precise looking number would not be.
Is this IRCTC?
No. We are not IRCTC and not connected to Indian Railways in any way. This is only for working out a budget. Book on IRCTC or through an authorised agent.
How much extra is Tatkal?
About 30% over the base fare, with class wise minimum and maximum limits. The calculator adds it to the base part only, which is how it actually works.
Why is a short AC journey so costly per km?
Minimum fare. A 50 km trip in 3A would come to under Rs 100 by rate alone, but a minimum applies. Over longer distances the per km cost evens out.
