What this assumes
- Fares are estimates from published per kilometre rates, not live prices.
- Travel times use rough average speeds and do not include connections, waiting or delays.
- Flight time includes about 3.5 hours for airport travel, check in, security and boarding. This is why short flights save less time than people expect.
- Car cost includes wear and tear, which is what makes the comparison honest rather than flattering to driving.
- Comfort ratings are our opinion, not a measurement.
Common questions
When does driving become cheaper than the train?
At the number shown in your result. For most intercity routes with a sleeper or 3A ticket, it lands around 3 to 4 people. Below that the train wins on cost, and usually on tiredness too.
Is the flight always fastest?
Door to door, often not. Airport travel, check in, security and boarding add about three and a half hours. On routes under 500 km, a good train frequently gets you there sooner.
Are these live fares?
No. Everything here comes from published rate structures. Check IRCTC, the bus operator or the airline for a real price before booking.
What is missing from the car cost?
Insurance and road tax, because you pay those anyway. And driver tiredness on long routes, which no calculator can price but which matters a lot.
