The formula
What this assumes
- Two people to a room. Three people still need two rooms, which is why odd numbers cost more per head.
- A 5 day trip means 4 nights. A day trip has no hotel cost.
- Local travel (autos, cabs) is shared by the group. It does not cost more because there are four of you.
- Food and entry tickets are per person. Hotel is per room.
- A 12% buffer is added because trips always cost a little more than planned.
- Hotel and food rates are researched averages for that type of place, not live prices for any particular hotel.
Common questions
How accurate is this?
Close enough to plan with. Hotel is the most variable part, since the same town has rooms at Rs 800 and Rs 8,000. Pick the level you actually stay at and the total will land near the mark.
Why do 3 people cost more per head than 4?
Rooms. Three people need two rooms, and so do four. Same hotel bill, but divided among fewer people. Odd numbered groups always pay more each.
Is shopping included?
No. It varies too much between people to guess. Add your own amount on top.
Why a 12% buffer?
Because something always comes up. An extra cab, an entry fee that went up, a meal you did not plan. Keep it aside and be happy if you bring it back.
