Search for Delhi to Manali cost and you get a bus fare. Useful, but it answers maybe a fifth of the question. Here is the whole thing, for four people over five days.

Getting there: four ways
Delhi to Manali is about 540 km by road. There is no railway station at Manali — the nearest is Joginder Nagar, and almost nobody uses it.

If you drive
Split four ways that is Rs 2,775 each return — cheaper than a Volvo both ways at Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000. With four people, driving wins on this route. With two, it does not.
The wear and tear line is not padding. Tyres, servicing and brakes get consumed by distance, and hill driving is harder on all three than highway running.

Four people need two rooms. So four nights in a mid-range hotel is 4 × Rs 3,000 × 2 = Rs 24,000 — usually the largest single line in the budget.
Old Manali is cheaper and has the cafés. Mall Road is pricier and more convenient. Naggar and Vashisht are quieter and cheaper again if you have your own transport.

For four people over five days at the middle level, that is around Rs 17,000 — more than the entire travel cost, and the line people most often forget to plan.

Rs 17,100 per person. Note where it went: hotel and food together are Rs 41,000 of it. The travel everyone argued about is Rs 11,100.
Things specific to this route
- Rohtang Pass needs a permit, numbers are capped daily, and it closes in winter. The Atal Tunnel does not need one and stays open.
- Manali to Leh only runs roughly June to September. Outside that window the road is shut.
- Winter driving needs chains beyond Solang. If you are not confident on ice, take a local taxi for that stretch.
- Kullu–Manali highway landslides in monsoon. July–August travel can mean long unplanned halts.
- Do not drive straight through overnight and start sightseeing. Twelve to fourteen hours on hill roads costs you the next day whether you budgeted for it or not.
Where to actually save
- Travel midweek. Volvo fares and hotel rates both drop.
- Stay in Old Manali or Vashisht rather than Mall Road.
- Eat one meal a day at a local place. Over five days for four people this is several thousand rupees.
- Go four, not three. Three people still need two rooms — your per-head cost drops if a fourth joins.
- Avoid peak weeks if your dates are flexible. It is the single biggest lever.

September and October are the best value. Clear weather after the monsoon, normal prices, and far fewer people than May.

Day one does almost nothing on purpose. After twelve to fourteen hours on the road, planning sightseeing for the arrival day is how people end up tired for the whole trip.
Two people instead of four

Two people pay more each, because the car and the local taxis are shared between fewer of them. For a couple, the bus is usually the better call — Rs 6,000 return for two beats Rs 11,100 for the car.
What to carry
- Warm clothes, even in summer. Manali nights are cold in May, and Rohtang or the tunnel area is colder still.
- Medicines. Altitude affects some people beyond Solang.
- Cash. UPI is patchy on the way to Solang and beyond the tunnel.
- ID for permits if you plan to go towards Rohtang.
- Comfortable shoes. Old Manali and Vashisht mean a lot of walking on uneven ground.
Questions people ask
Is Manali doable in a weekend?
Barely, and not enjoyably. Twelve to fourteen hours each way means two days on the road. Three nights is the realistic minimum, four or five is better.
Bus or own car for a family with children?
Car, if someone is comfortable with a long hill drive. Stops when needed and no fixed schedule matter more with children than the cost difference does.
Do I need to book hotels in advance?
In May, June and the New Year week, yes. In September and October you will often get a better rate walking in than booking online.
Is snow guaranteed in winter?
In Manali town, no. Higher up towards Solang and beyond the tunnel, usually from late December. Nobody can promise it on specific dates, and operators who do are selling something.
How much cash should we carry?
Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 for a group of four over five days, with cards and UPI for hotels and larger restaurants. Taxis, small shops and anything beyond the tunnel prefer cash.
Is the Atal Tunnel worth building a day around?
Yes, and it has changed this trip considerably. It stays open through winter, needs no permit, and puts Sissu and Lahaul within a comfortable day trip. Leave early — traffic builds through the morning in season and the return can take twice as long.
